Cargo ship stuck under brand new Groningen bridge
A freighter got stuck under a brand new bridge in the Groningen town of Noordhorn on Tuesday morning. The bridge is only 43 days old. No one was injured, AD reports.
The cargo ship was too tall to pass underneath the bridge. It came halfway through before it got stuck. Initially it was thought that a fire broke out on the ship, but this turned out not to be the case. The freighter will be pulled free this afternoon. The extent of damage to the new bridge is not yet clear.
Bert Nederveen, ChristenUnie alderman in nearby Zuidhorn, had to climb through the booms to get across the bridge this morning, he told the newspaper. The bridge is closed to car traffic.
