Dutch man killed in small plane crash on Majorca

A 47-year-old Dutch man was killed in an accident with a small plane on the Spanish island of Majorca on Sunday. Richard de Nijs took off in good weather on Sunday morning, but quickly found himself in thick clouds in the Tramuntana mountain range, according to newspaper AD. The local authorities believe he crashed into a mountain hidden by the clouds.

The small plane went up in flames after the crash, also causing a small forest fire, according to the newspaper. De Nijs, who had been living in Barcelona for some time, was found dead in the cockpit.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the 47-year-old Dutchman's death to AD. "We had contact with the family", a spokesperson said to the newspaper. "They are traveling to Spain, where the man lived for a time."
