Truck driver questioned about accident that killed Wierden girl, 7
A 59-year-old man from Hardenberg was questioned as a suspect in an accident that killed a 7-year-old girl in Wierden on Friday morning. The young girl was hit by a truck on Nijverdalsestraat around 8:00 a.m.
According to newspaper AD, the police believe that the truck driver parked his car on the street, which is slanted downhill, and got out. The truck started rolling down the hill and hit the 7-year-old girl. She died at the scene. The truck came to a stop at a Total gas station.
The girl was on her bicycle, waiting at a streetlight with a friend. The friend managed to get out of the way of the truck in time to avoid injury.
The authorities arranged victim aid for the girl's friend and the school they attend. The truck driver was also offered aid.
At the scene, the police spoke of a "horrifying accident that you don't see every day", according to the newspaper.
