Brabant teacher arrested for relationship with minor student

A teacher at the Elde College in the Noord-Brabant town of Sint-Michielsgestel was arrested for having a relationship with an underage student. The Elde College suspended him with immediate effect, the school wrote on its website on Monday night.

The police launched an investigation into the teacher after a witness contacted them and told them about the suspected relationship, according to Eindhovens Dagblad. The teacher was arrested on Friday, questioned and released again on Saturday night. Officers are also speaking wit the girl and other witnesses.

"The student is underage and therefore the teacher is punishable. Despite being freed, he remains a suspect. This will be the case until the court has ruled or until the Public Prosecutor decided not to prosecute", a spokesperson for the police said to the newspaper.

Investigators also informed the school about what is going on. In a response on their website, Elde College informed parents that the teacher was suspended with immediate effect and that the school is considering which measures are "appropriate".

"This situation impacted our students and employees. We will be very careful in dealing with this", the statement reads. "The school is working closely with the police and care agencies. It was also reported to all competent agencies. The school regrets the situation and grants all cooperation in the criminal investigation."
