A young woman on Wednesday was identified as Sarah Papenheim, a 21-year-old American drummer and student studying psychology at Erasmus University, according to multiple Dutch news sources. The police confirmed to RTL Nieuws that the victim had American nationality.

The number of students enrolled for a bachelor's or master's program at Dutch universities increased by 5 percent to a record number of nearly 290 thousand students this academic years, according to preliminary figures by umbrella association VSNU. The final numbers will only be available early next year, NOS reports.

The growth can partly be attributed to larger intake by pre-university education (VWO) and higher professional education (HBO). The number of international students also increased. They now make up about 19 percent of all students.

Dog trainers and animal experts are concerned about the University of Amsterdam's plan to in its library where students can cuddle with puppies and get rid of their stress during exam week. The puppies will indeed decrease students' stress, but being cuddled by dozens of students may not be good for the puppies' welfare.

The Amsterdam University Library is helping students deal with the stress of exam week. The Library opened a special 'puppy room', where students can go cuddle with a puppy for 15 minutes and recharge before getting back to studying, RTL Nieuws reports.

The police cleared protesting students out of the University of Amsterdam's P.C. Hoofdhuis building on Friday evening. A total of 30 students were arrested for trespassing - they were not allowed inside the building. All of them were released from custody again on Saturday evening, NU.nl reports.

A group of students occupied the P.C. Hoofthuis of the University of Amsterdam on Friday. They are protesting against government budget cuts and the "erosion of education", ANP reports.

The students, calling themselves Autonomous University Postcolonial House, barricaded the entrances of the building on Spuistraat and hung a red banner from the roof. The banner reads: 'Autonomous University'.

For the first time students in the Netherlands on average pay over 400 euros per month for a room. Student housing rents increased more than 5 percent compared to last year, according to student housing website Kamernet, RTL Nieuws reports. 

Amsterdam is the most expensive when it comes to student housing, with an average price of 571 euros per month for a room. Rotterdam saw a student housing rent increase of 7.4 percent to 460 euros per month.

An increasing number of students end up at the student house doctor's office complaining of psychological problems. They are increasingly dealing with fatigue, concentration problems, panic attacks, anxiety and addiction problems. The increase of students facing such problems also means an increase in waiting times for a psychologist, the Volkskrant reported on Tuesday after speaking to house doctors who specifically treat students.

According to the students, the police used batons, pepper spray and police dogs on them and several students sustained injuries. GroenLinks parliamentarian Zihni Ozdil wants an explanation from Education Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven, Het Parool reports.

An 18-year-old student from Apeldoorn died after being critically injured in a climbing accident in Ardennes, Belgium last week, his football club a.v.v. Columbia said on their website, RTL Nieuws reports.

The young man studied Sports and Movement at Aventus in Apeldoorn. He was taking part in a group activity of a campsite in Engreux, Belgium when the accident happened. He fell 20 meters. A helicopter rushed him to a hospital in the Liege region.

Young people in vocational education MBO wants the government to officially refer to them as 'students'. Currently they are still called 'participants' in Dutch law, resulting in them not having access to all student benefits, according to the youth organization for vocational education JOB, NOS reports.

"It often happens now that you are told that you are not welcome somewhere, because you as MBO student are not a student", Roosmarijn Dam of JOB said to NOS. "Then you automatically start believing it."

A lecturer at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences in Enschede was suspended after a female student accused him of sexual harassment, a spokesperson for the university confirmed to RTL Nieuws after reports in newspaper Tubantia.

The incident happened at the Creative Technology Academy over a year ago, but the student only recently reported it to the university. Saxion would not tell RTL whether the suspended lecturer also worked in other departments of the university.

Anne Buurma, a former study leader and lecturer at theater school Toneelschool Arnhem, had numerous sexual relationships with students in the 90's, eight former students and three others involved told the Volkskrant. Actress Nienke Romer and a few other students reported his behavior to the other teachers at the school, resulting in Buurma leaving the school in 2000. The former students agreed to tell their story because they feel that at the time, it was insufficiently acknowledged that Buurma's behavior was unacceptable, the Volkskrant reports.

The police are investigating the cause of death of a 21-year-old man from Groningen, whose body was found next to the train tracks under the Hereweg viaduct in Groningen on Sunday morning. Investigators are still in the dark about what happened to the young man and call on witnesses to come forward.

Public transit card company Translink passed on the travel data of dozens of students to government education service DUO so far this year, the Volkskrant reported on Tuesday. The data is used to check that the students are not claiming higher allowances than their due by saying they no longer live with their parents while they still do. Travelers' organization Maatschappij voor Beter OV feels that DUO is violating privacy rules, according to the newspaper.

Two Rotterdam students planned to vacation in the United States, but they got no further than JFK Airport in New York. There the American authorities decided to deny them access to the country. "Because we are Muslim", Othmane Charib and Ismail Aghzanay said in a video they made from London after being deported. 

"We were treated like criminals. We had to sit back to back with each other and weren't allowed to make eye contact." Charib tells in the video. "They took our pictures and fingerprints. Our tickets were torn to pieces. Dogs are treated better."

A teacher at the Elde College in the Noord-Brabant town of Sint-Michielsgestel was arrested for having a relationship with an underage student. The Elde College suspended him with immediate effect, the school wrote on its website on Monday night.

The police launched an investigation into the teacher after a witness contacted them and told them about the suspected relationship, according to Eindhovens Dagblad. The teacher was arrested on Friday, questioned and released again on Saturday night. Officers are also speaking wit the girl and other witnesses.

A 22-year-old student was killed in a house fire on Emmanuel Murandstraat in Leeuwarden early on Monday morning. Firefighters rescued the victim with a crane and resuscitated him at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries, the Leeuwarder Courant reports.

A crowdfunding action started to help Amsterdam student Doeta Aartsma restart her business after her equipment was stolen from her home over Christmas, is gaining support. So far about a third of the 10 thousand euros she needs has been raised.

"I actually feel very rich", Aartsma said to Het Parool. "You could say that I should have lost faith in humanity after this nasty experience, but because so many known and unknown people support me, that is not the case."

The body found in the Lopende Diep canal in Groningen on Monday was identified Wytze Pennink, the police confirmed. The 18-year-old student went missing on Friday.
