NS opens train station campsite for students who couldn't find living space
NS will set up a campsite at Utrecht Central Station for first-year students who weren’t able to find accommodation in the city in time for the university’s orientation period next month. Twenty first-year students can camp at the train station during Utrecht’s Introduction Time (UIT) from August 11 to 14, and NS will provide all the necessities, the rail company announced.
“Each tent will have a made-up bed, and NS will provide everything you need,” the rail company said, listing breakfast, drinks, earplugs, and a bicycle for the daily commute to the UIT program in Utrecht city center. “So, students hardly need to bring anything with them, except a charger and a toothbrush.”
The campsite is intended for first-year students who will be studying in Utrecht and have to travel far to get there. Interested students must make a video and send it to NS’s Instagram account by Friday. The rail company will inform those who got a spot by next weekend.
The public transport card that allows students to travel for free only activates on September 1, so students who have to travel far for the orientation period will have to do that at their own expense, an NS spokesperson told RTV Utrecht. “Because taking the train from Groningen to Utrecht every day during the orientation week is a bit far, even for NS,” the rail company said.
