Maimed body found in Wageningen dog park; one arrested
The maimed body of a 21-year-old man was found in Wageningen on Wednesday afternoon. He was killed in a crime, the police confirmed. One suspect, also a 21-year-old man, was arrested.
The victim was found just after 3:00 p.m. in the middle of a dog park in a wooded strip behind a block of houses on Gruttoweide, according to newspaper AD. According to witnesses, te victim was wearing bright orange clothing and was working as a gardener. His body was heavily maimed. A police officer at the scene initially said that the victim died during pruning work, but that statement was later withdrawn.
The suspect that was arrested was wearing the same bright orange clothing The police would not confirm whether suspect and victim were working together. Bystanders told AD that the two young men were fighting. The police would not confirm that either.
A mobile medical team and an air ambulance were dispatched to the scene, but the call-out was canceled before they arrived. Presumably because the victim died.
The police closed down a large part of the Wageningen area. Residents of a house bordering the wooded strip were told not to enter their back yard. A bus lane and bicycle parking near the campus on the north side of Wageningen were also closed down with crime scene tape. According to AD, this is where the suspect was arrested.
A mobile detective office was set up in the street near where the body was found as more and more police officers arrived to investigate. A police helicopter took pictures from the sky.
