Rotterdam man dies in police custody

A 40-year-old man died in Rotterdam early Wednesday morning after being arrested by the police. The healthcare institution where the man was housed had called the police because he was causing problems there, a police report said.. When the police arrived at the facility, staff already had the man under control, Dutch authorities claimed.

His condition worsened shortly after the police cuffed him and took him away. The officers then tried to resuscitate the man and he was rushed to the hospital, where he died at about 1 a.m.

The cause of death is not yet known. The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at the police, is investigating, police said.
