Military truck driver arrested in deadly highway crash
A military truck driver was arrested after he crashed his truck into a traffic jam on the A7 near Middenmeer on Monday afternoon. One person was killed and another was wounded in the accident, RTL Nieuws reports.
The truck driver was arrested by the Koninklijke Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military. A spokesperson for the Marechaussee could not tell RTL exactly why the driver was arrested. For the Dutch police it is standard procedure to arrest the driver involved in a fatal traffic accident. The circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.
The traffic jam the truck crashed into was caused by an earlier accident involving a motorcycle, according to the broadcaster.
Earlier on Monday there was a similar accident on the A326 between Bergharen and Bankhoef. There too a truck crashed into a traffic jam, damaging five cars. Several people were injured, one sustained critical injuries. The truck driver in this case was also arrested.
