Funeral held for Hague cop killed in New Year's accident
The Hague police officer Mario was buried with solemn dignity in Boskoop on Thursday. The 36-year-old officer sustained severe brain injuries when he was hit by a car over New Year's. He died after being in a coma for a week and a half.
The officer's coffin was covered by the red-white-and-blue flag and was received in Boskoop by an honor guard of his colleagues, according to ANP. Police officers in official uniform also flanked the coffin during the ceremony.
The ceremony was attended by Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice, Chief of the National Police Erik Akerboom and Hague Mayor Jozias van Aarsen.
Police officer Mario's death was an accident, the police investigation indicates. There is no sign of intent. It is believed that the driver of the car that hit him, could not see the officer due to smoke on the street.
