Assault rifle attack in Brabant village terrifies young couple
A shooting incident involving a Kalashnikov or other form of assault rifle in Putte on Wednesday left a young couple terrified. An Audi parked on Schoolstraat was riddled with bullets. And one stray bullet shot straight through the couple's house.
"We dove to the ground and crawled across the floor. We were shaking with fear", 25-year-old Indya Dingemans said to Omroep Brabant. "I just came from upstairs and wanted to sit on the couch and watch television when I suddenly heard a loud bang. Initially I thought of fireworks, but Mike shouted immedately that something's wrong. He pulled me down."
Indya and 27-year-old boyfriend Mike Kras crawled to the kitchen to hide. "You don't know what's going on and whether there will be more shots." Mike said to the broadcaster. "We were terrified. In hindsight we were very lucky. That bullet went through our house with such force. What if we stood on that spot?"
The bullet entered through a window in front of the house, hit a lampshade and left the house through a back window.
Dozens of residents on Schoolstraat were startled by the gunshots on Wednesday night. The seeming target, an Audi, was riddled with bullets. A dark car van was seen speeding away from the scene. So far there is no trace of the shooters. Their motive is also unclear. The police are investigating.
A burnt out car was found in the Belgian village of Stabroek. The police are investigating whether it is connected to the shooting.
