Zaandam police take 21 people in custody during curfew disturbance

The Zaandam police arrested a total of 21 people for disturbing the curfew put in place due to turmoil in the Poelenburg neighborhood. Five of the suspects will have to appear in court. Seven were fined, ANP reports.

The detainees are suspected of, among other things, disrupting peace, breaking curfew, breaking the ban on assembly, violence, intimidation, sedition, defamation and destruction of property.

The unrest was caused by a group of young people that posted video blogs on YouTube of them vandalizing property or harassing bystanders.

A total of 40 charges were pressed surrounding the unrest in Poelenburg, Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice said to parliament on Tuesday. The unrest and disturbances since declined.

The police believe that more arrests may follow.
