Stolen painting recovered in Leeuwarden is a fake
One of paintings recovered in Leeuwarden last week is a fake, experts established. The paintings were recovered in a storage unit 17 years after being stolen in Bilthoven.
The fake painting is title d "Cafe interior restaurant" by Isaac Israels, according to the Telegraaf. The second painting found - "Horses in the barn" by Wouterus Verschuur - is real. The police believe that both paintings were the ones stolen from Bilthoven 17 years ago, and that the fake painting was fake when it was stolen.
A total of seven paintings were stolen in a violent robbery in Bilthoven in 1999. Five of them were recovered in 2012. The recently recovered two will be returned to relatives of the original owner.
The paintings were found while the police searched a storage unit belonging to a 37-year-old Leeuwarden man arrested for illegal weapons possession.
