Rotterdam police chase 4 suspects to Belgium
The police arrested four Belgian suspects on Tuesday night after a high speed chase that started near Zuidplein in Rotterdam and ended in Hoevenen in Belgium. Shots were fired during the chase, the police said in a statement on their website.
The chase started around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, when the police responded to a report of a fight in a taxi near Zuidplein. When the police approached the taxi, they heard a loud bang that sounded like a gunshot. The police signaled the taxi to stop, but instead the driver sped off. It is unclear why he did so.
After a long chase that involved several police cars and a helicopter and crossed the A17, A58 and A4, the taxi finally came to a stop when it tried to leave the highway at Hoevenen.
The Rotterdam officers ordered the suspects to get out of the car. They refused and the police fired several warning shots. One directed shot was fired when the suspects still refused to get out. Only then the suspects surrendered.
Four men were arrested and taken to the police station for questioning. It is unclear what they are suspected of. According to the police, one of the suspects sustained a head wound during the chase. They are investigating how this happened.
