Ministry to ban toxic substance train transport between Eindhoven and Venlo
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment is working to make sure that no freight trains carrying toxic gasses, flammable liquids or toxic liquids travel on the route between Eindhoven and Venlo any more, Endhoven Dagblad reports.
In principle toxic substances are already banned from the route, only flammable gasses are allowed. But on Wednesday ProRail figures revealed that four types of toxic substances are regularly transported on trains between Eindhoven and Venlo.
Venlo mayor Antoin Scholten is furious about this revelation. He called it shameful that the involved municipalities were not even informed, 1Limburg reports. According to him, this damaged the municipalities' confidence in the government.
Deurne mayor Hilko Mak is also unhappy about the news. "This is ridiculous", the mayor said to AD. "We need to know what goes across the track through Deurne, in connection with our safety plans."
