Schiphol considering nearby second airport location, expansion

Schiphol airport wants to expand even more and is considering opening a second location in Haarlemmermeer to relieve some pressure on Schiphol Center, the Telegraaf reports. Between 2000 and 2015 the number of passengers traveling through Schiphol increased from some 39 million to over 58 million a year. The airport wants to expand further to accommodate between 70 and 80 million passengers a year and the current expansion plans are not enough to account for the growth, even with Lelystad Airport taking some of the pressure, according to the newspaper. Hence a second location. The airport wants to open Schiphol-West in 2030 and hopes to locate it between the A4 and A5, more towards the city of Amsterdam. The Telegraaf reports that this second location has the coalition divided - the VVD is for it, the Pvda has doubts. But it is likely that a final decision on this matter will be made by the next cabinet.
