D66 wants Climate and Energy Min. on next cabinet

The next cabinet will include a Ministry focused solely on Climate and Energy, if it is up to the D66. The party wants a more clear approach to the climate policy to show that the Netherlands is serious about fighting climate change, Z24 reports. The goals set at the Climate Summit in Paris last year will not be achieved with the current fragmented approach, D66 parliamentarian Stientje van Veldhoven said to Z24. "State Secretary Sharon Dijksma (Infrastructure and Environment, ed) makes international agreements in Paris. But to reach to goals of, for example, closing the coal plants, placing wind turbines or saving energy, she is dependent on Minister Henk Kamp (Economic Affairs). That does not work well", she said. The D66 believes there will be enough work for a Climate Minister to focus on, including reaching the goals of the summit, extending and strengthening the climate agreement and figuring out what to do about the coal plants. The Tweede Kamer, lower house of Dutch parliament, is debating the outcome of the Climate Summit in Paris on Thursday night.
