Father gunned down on Utrecht street as daughter watched in horror
A 37-year-old man of Moroccan descent was gunned down in front of his daughter in IJsselstein, in the province of Utrecht on Sunday morning. A bystander rushed him to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The police arrested one suspect. The police received the first reports of the shooting on Lanceerplaats at around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. According to newspaper AD, he was attacked just after getting into his car, on his way to taking his daughter to an Arabic lesson. She was already in the car. "I heard gunshots and a woman screamed" a local resident, who asked to be kept anonymous, said to the newspaper. "I looked outside and saw a man with a big gun. He had a ski mask on. He then ran towards the playground." The shooting happened in broad daylight in a parking lot between several apartment buildings. According to neighbors, the victim is a resident of one of he apartments. He had three children. The police launched a massive search for the perpetrator, deploying a helicopter, a Swat team and a mobile unit. A short time after the shooting a suspect was arrested on Randdijk, not far away from the scene of the crime. The police believe that more perpetrators were involved and are investigating. The suspect was arrested after a resident saw a man hiding in a shed in his garden. According to him, the suspect is a young man. "The police were already in the neighborhood and I called them to come here", the man said to AD. "The boy jumped over ditches, but they caught him." Local residents believe that the murder was an assassination in the criminal world. Several people told the newspaper that there are regular drug deals in the neighborhood. A few weeks ago the police intercepted 5 thousand kilograms of cocaine in Antwerp. It was destined for the Netherlands. The police expressed their concern that the confiscation of the about 15 million euros worth of drugs will lead to retaliation in the criminal underworld, particularly in the form of assassinations. It is as yet unclear whether there is any connection between this drug bust and Sunday's shooting.
