Second held in explosion that hurt four; five houses & 12 cars damaged
A second person was arrested in connection with a fireworks explosion on Zalm in Ridderkerk just after midnight on New Year's. Four people were injured in the explosion and five houses and 12 cars were damaged.
The explosion happened around 00:20 a.m. on January 1st. When the police responded a 51 year old Ridderkerk resident acknowledged that he was responsible for the explosion and the police arrested him. He is still in custody.
The police then launched an extensive investigation into exactly what happened and what type of firework was involved. This led them to the second suspect - a 27 year old man from Rotterdam. His exact role in the incident is still being investigated. He was arrested on Sunday.
The investigation also revealed that the incident involved an illegal firework, instead of a homemade firework bomb as was first suspected.
Two of the injured people were taken to the hospital to be checked over.
