Elderly wrong-way driver seriously injures one in five separate accidents

A person driving in the wrong direction on the A16 on Sunday evening caused several accidents between Breda and Antwerp. No one was injured in the four accidents in the Netherlands, but one person was hurt in a more severe collision in Belgium, according to the police. The driver was first noticed near Breda around 6:25 p.m. He was finally stopped and arrested in Belgium around 6:45 p.m. The driver was handed over to the Belgian police. The A16 near Breda was closed down for some time, but reopened around 8:00 p.m., news wire ANP reports. Belgian newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen reports that he was admitted to the hospital with injuries. So far nothing is known about the driver's identity, except for the fact that he is an 83 year old man. It is also unclear why the man drove against traffic for at least 10 kilometers.
