Dutch Navy intercepts 1,400 kilo drug shipment near Colombia
The Dutch navy ship Zr. Ms. Friesland made the navy's biggest drug bust last weekend and intercepted some 1,400 kilograms of cocaine off the Colombian coast, the Ministry of Defense announced on Friday, AD reports.
The Dutch navy intercepted the smuggling boat around 150 kilometers from the coast of Colombia after receiving a signal from the United States coast guard. The Zr. Ms. Friesland deployed a helicopter. Officers on board the helicopter fired shots at the boat after the smugglers ignored warning shots. The outboard engines were hit.
American officers on board the Friesland helicopter arrested the crew. The crew of the smuggling boat threw an estimated 2 thousand kilos of cocaine over board when they were discovered. The navy officers managed to fish out and seize 1,350 kilograms of the drugs. The rest sank.
