PSV Eindhoven to experiment with LED lights; spotlight on penalties, empty food stands

PSV Eindhoven is planning to experiment with the possibilities offered by the new LED lighting from Philips. The football team hopes to use the lighting to put spotlights on individual players, on the penalty area when there is a penalty and show the way to food stands with the shortest queues. The first ever major league game to be lit with LED lighting was the PSV-Excelsior match on Saturday, AD reports. A light show kicked off the match, though there was little playing with possibilities during the match. The light levels were only switched once, after the 1-0 of Davy Propper. The Philips ArenaVision is LED field lighting that meets the requirements of international sports federations and TV channels. The lighting can be used to put a spotlight on specific parts of the field so that you can even see the players gestures and expressions. In the coming period, PSV will be exploring the limits of what can be done. In US basketball, for example, it is already customary to have a light show, accompanied by sound and video, after a score. "Football has not gone into that as of yet." PSV general manager Toon Gerbrands said to the newspaper before the match on Saturday. "We are hoping for a letter from the KNVB that we should not be doing what we're doing. Then we can enter a discussion about what we are allowed."
