Railway: Kids increasingly playing on train tracks
ProRail is concerned about the increasing number of kids seen playing on train tracks. Train drivers have reported 168 incidents of kids playing on or near train tracks so far this year, compared to the usual 150 to 200 reports a year.
The rail operator announced this on Thursday. "Playing on the tracks is extremely dangerous and prohibited. A train travels at high speed and can not swerve out. Just do not do so." ProRail writes on its website.
ProRail has taken extra measures to prevent dangerous behavior near the train tracks. These measures includes fences and hedges around the tracks to make them less accessible, warning signs on platforms, officers patrolling around along the track and a pilot project with surveillance cameras.
The rail operator also offers schools a lesson package called PazzUp, to inform kids about the dangers of the train tracks and how to be safe in its vicinity. The central message is that you must always be on guard at the tracks and abide by traffic rules.
