Zwarte Piet protests to turn up pressure at Sint's arrival
Anti-Zwarte Piet groups are planning protests and demonstrations at the national entry of Sinterklaas on November 14th in Meppel.
During nationwide demonstrations and gatherings on slave liberation day on Wednesday, spokesperson Jerry Afriyie called for a demonstration in Meppel, Dagblad van het Noorde reports. The demonstration has to be bigger than previous demonstrations at Sinterklaas' arrivel.
According to Afriyie, the death of Mitch Henriquez, likely as the result of his aggressive arrest in The Hague on Saturday, stresses the need to get rid of racism in The Netherlands.
Leo Weterings, spokesperson for the municipality of Meppel, told the newspaper that they are waiting for a request from the protesters asking permission for a demonstration. "And then will go to the table with a cup of coffee to discuss what is going to happen." he said.
