Two-year prison term given for cab driver kidnapping
A 27 year old man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison, 4 of them suspended, for robbing a taxi driver at gun point, AT5 reports. He must also pay 7,500 euros in compensation to the taxi driver.
The incident happened in Amsterdam in February this year. The perpetrator got into a taxi in the city center and instructed the driver to drive towards Sloteraart. During the ride, the perpetrator pulled a loaded pistol on the driver and demanded that he hand over his phone and money.
On Johan Huizingalaan in Nieuw-West, the driver saw a police car and gently crashed into it in an effort to draw the officers' attention. After the collision, the driver jumped out of his taxi and ran away. The officers got out of their car and arrested the passenger in the taxi. They found the firearm in the taxi.
According to AT5, the perpetrator expressed his regret about the incident in court. He claims that he cannot remember the incident as he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
