Video: Bystanders save woman from drowning in sinking car
Three bystanders rescued a woman from a sinking car in the Duivendrechtsevaart on Wednesday morning. Someone managed to film the heroic rescue.
The three rescuers all work for companies on William Fenengastraat. The video shows them swimming towards the car, pulling the woman out through the window and swimming with her back to the side while the car disappears under the water.

Sander Schonhuth (42), one of the men who pulled the woman out of the car, spoke to Het Parool. "I was at work when I suddenly heard the sound of a roaring engine, followed by a splash. I looked outside and saw a car floating." he told the newspaper. Schonhuth, who works at Ambush Media next to the canal, rushed outside and heart two men already in the water shouting for a hammer. He quickly grabbed a hammer and dove into the water. "We smashed the window, but we still had a lot of trouble getting the woman out of the car. She was stuck under the steering wheel. We only succeeded after she already disappeared under water."
The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance. Her condition is unknown. It is also unclear how her car ended up in the water. A diving team from the fire department searched the canal to make sure no one else was in the car.
