Dozens of horses rescued in sport complex fire
A large fire broke out at the sport and tennis complex on Beekweg in Belfast, near Venlo just after 01:00 this morning. Firefighters quickly realized that the complex was beyond saving and focused on saving the nearby riding school.
The Tennis center De Poelder as well as the fitness center burned to the ground. But the firefighters managed to protect the riding school against the fire. According to the fire department, the plating melted, but the riding school was otherwise spared, De Telegraaf reports. The owner of the riding school and residents moved about 20 horses to another part of the riding school, which is farther away from the fire.
The fire was under control around 03:00 a.m. No one was hurt during the fire. A lot of smoke was released, but the wind was favorable and blew the smoke towards the highway and not towards residential areas. No harmful substances were released during the fire, but the fire department still warned local residents to stay out of the smoke.
