Missing man found dead after Amsterdam boat crash
A 66-year-old man was found dead Saturday evening near the Zuider IJdijk in Amsterdam, police said. The man was missing since just before noon that day after the yacht he was riding in was struck by a barge.
The crew of the pusher boat rescued a wounded 49-year-old man from the water shortly after the accident. Both victims are from Helmond, Noord Brabant.
Their relationship to each other was not reported by police.
The yacht was reportedly stalled in the water due to a mechanical fault when the accident took place. The cause of the wreck is still under investigation, police said.
A dive team and helicopter search team contributed in the rescue attempt. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including police, the fire department and Waternet.
