Joran van der Sloot stabbed in prison: attorney

Joran van der Sloot was stabbed in the Challapalca prison in Peru. According to the Vice President of the Institute for Penitentiary Institutions (INPE) in Peru, it seems that he stabbed himself. According to Van der Sloot's wife Leidy, he was stabbed in the shoulder and in his liver. His attorney, Maximo Altez, added that that the wounds are at least 2 centimeters deep. Leidy went to visit Van der Sloot on Sunday. She brought back a blood smeared polo shirt as proof. According to Julio Magan, doctors said that Van der Sloot's injuries are probably self inflicted because the wounds are not the result of a fight or aggression. This statement is contrary to the assertion of Van der Sloot's attorney, who said on Monday that his client was stabbed by other inmates because they want the Challapalca prison to be closed. Van der Sloot is the only foreigner in the prison and his death would cause a scandal. Van der Sloot is in the infirmary with three stab wounds in his back and one in his waist. The Dutchman is serving a 28 year sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores. The Challapalca prison has been the subject of some discussion. Human rights groups want the prison to be closed, partly because of its remote location and the extreme weather conditions. At night the temperatures can fall to minus 20 degrees and there is no heating.
