Seventy paintings newly linked to Rembrandt

Seventy "new" paintings have been attributed to Rembrandt in recent years. This writes Rembrandt expert Erns van de Wetering in the sixth and final part of an extensive retrospective catalogue of paintings by the famous artist. This catalogue will be presented at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on Wednesday. Many of the 70 paintings were previously written off as just an example of Rembrandt, and were attributed to a pupil or artist of the same era. But new techniques such as X-ray and infrared studies prove that they must be by Rembrandt himself. The work of the painter now consists of 340 paintings. Van de Wetering has been head of the Rembrandt Research Project since 1993, which has been investigating the authenticity of Rembrandt paintings since 1968.
