Robbery attempt leaves bank in ruins

Thieves attempted to rob an ATM from ING on the Grietsestraat in Zevenaar with explosives Friday morning. As this failed, the culprits rammed the building with a car, leaving the bank with a lot of damage, Omroep Gelderland reports. The robbery did not go exactly as planned. Police suspect that the thieves attempted to use explosives to crack open the ATM first. As this did not work, they drove into the building with a car. The culprits may have had to leave their escape vehicle behind as the explosion made the air bags in the car inflate, making the car impossible to drive. The damage to the building is extensive, and the explosion was heard from far away in the area. The attempted robbery occurred at around 2:30 a.m Friday morning. It is unclear if the culprits made away with anything. A neighbor saw someone run away with a plastic bag, but could not clearly see what was in the bad. In total, there are four suspects, who escaped on foot. The Explosives Ordnance Disposal unit (EOD) was called in as there may be residual explosive material at the scene. A bomb expert inspected whether the situation was safe for the police to start investigating. https://twitter.com/delanopolman/status/467199106847637505
