Dutch UN worker shot in Kenya robbery

A Dutch UN employee was wounded and a security guard was killed in an armed robbery on Thursday at the UN worker’s house in Nairobi, Kenya. The two men were shot, and another security guard was tied up in the incident.

Utrecht native Koen Toonen, 49, is said to be in bad shape, his brother Paul told newspaper Telegraaf. He is awaiting surgery at a hospital in the Kenyan capital. Toonen was startled early Thursday morning by the repeated barks of his two dogs. He saw heavily-armed men when he got out of bed, according to newspaper AD. He was shot in the leg by one of the men and decided to play dead. When the robbers fled he discovered the body of one guard, and found the other tied up. A laptop and mobile phone were taken in the robbery.
