New council-member injured by falling chandelier debris
Councilman Bas Hageman (VVD) in Nieuwbakken was unceremoniously welcomed into his newly gained position in the municipal council in Velsen, Noord-Holland.
During the live-broadcast announcement of the definitive arrangement of the municipal council by mayor Franc Weewind, Hageman was struck by a piece of glass on his back, which seemed to have come from a badly-installed chandelier.
Anybody watching the live broadcast on RTV Seaport was witness to the random accident. Hageman received a head injury and had to be treated.
A spokesperson for the municipality says the chandelier, which is 50 years old, came down because a screw wasn't secured properly after the renovation.
The municipality is making it known that they have executed a full inspection of the chandelier, are taking measures to ensure that this will never happen again, and that Hageman is doing fine.
