Rotterdam Aims to Become Most Sustainable Port City
Rotterdam is known as a main international port in Europe. However, the presence of many vessels each day has brought in environmental concerns.
The city emits 29.8 tons of carbon per head, one of the highest worldwide. Rotterdam’s carbon emissions are higher than those of other major cities including London and Shanghai at 9.6 tons per head and 11.7 tons per head respectively. The global average is around 4.6 tons per head.
Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has been creating measures to make Rotterdam the most sustainable port city in the world by reducing its carbon release by 50 percent.
