Check Bikes At Start School Year

Safe Traffic Netherlands (Veilig Verkeer Nederland – VVN) calls on parents to check the bikes of their children very well at the start of the new school year. "There is often something wrong with the brakes or the lights. Also the bell is often missing," said a spokesman of VVN on Saturday. Now the primary schools in the south of the country almost begin again, it is important to remind parents about the safety of the bikes of their kids. It is very important for the safety of the children that the bike is in order, said the spokesman. Therefore so-called bike checks are held next week at different places in the country. Bike checks are performed at Shell stations, where a bicycle repair man will take a good look at the bikes. They will look especially to the lights, reflectors, tire pressure and the height of the saddle. Parents and their children who attend a bike check, can also join a quiz to see if they have sufficient knowledge of the traffic rules. August 20 VVN will start the yearly campaign “The schools have started again”, to point out to motorists that many young children will be on the road when the new school year starts.
