Ceremonial Role as King

Prince Willem-Alexander will accept a ceremonial role as a king if the House decides so. This he said in an interview with RTL Nieuws and NOS. “I’ll accept anything, as long as the processes are democratic and laws are followed.” The prospective king says that he wants to build on the tradition of his predecessors, a tradition that stands for continuity and stability in the country. But he also wants to be a king that can bring the society together in the 21st century. If a majority of the House votes in favor of a ceremonial role for Willem-Alexander, the constitution will have to be changed because it says that the king is part of the government. Willem-Alexander plans to continue his mother’s tradition of meeting with the Minister-President every Monday. He thinks that the fact that they are both of the same generation will help their communication.
