Activists angered by the use of blackface around the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition are planning to protest in Dokkum on Saturday.
The government and the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Friesland and Gelderland will sign a covenant this week that will make Nedersaksisch an official, independent and full part of the Dutch language. In the covenant the government promises to protect and promote Nedersaksisch, known as Low Saxon in English, NOS reports.
Low Saxon is spoken in Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, the northeast Veluwe, the Achterhoek and in Oost- and Weststellingwerf. The official recognition comes with money for language projects, and for schools that want to promote a dialect in Lower Saxon.
The trial against 34 people suspected of blocking the A7 highway to prevent anti-Zwarte Peit protesters from reaching the national Sinterklaas arrival celebrations in Dokkum last year, started on Monday. The case was suspended shortly after it started because one of the judges, Willem Sikkema, lost consciousness, AD reports.
An employee of a parking manager at Schiphol was arrested with his girlfriend in Gorredijk, Friesland. They were caught using the home of people who were on vacation and had left their car with the parking manager. The residents of the home had no idea, Omrop Fryslan reports.

Temperatures measured 30 degrees at De Bilt at 11:20 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of maximums above 30 degrees, making a national heatwave a fact. For a national heatwave, De Bilt must have five consecutive days with maximums of 25 degrees or higher. Three of those days must measure temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.
Households in parts of Friesland, Overijssel and Flevoland may experience low water pressure in the coming days. Water consumption in these areas is currently much higher than normal due to the persistent heat, water company Vitens announced on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.
According to the water company, about 45 percent more water is currently being consumed in Friesland and Overissel than normal.
A total of four people were injured in two separate stabbings in Schiedam and in the Friesland city of Bolsward overnight. Two suspects were arrested, RTL Nieuws reports.
The Schiedam stabbing happened around midnight. Multiple people got into a fight on Stationsplein and a man was stabbed. The police arrested a man suspected of the stabbing. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Piet Hein van T., a 66-year-old child psychiatrist from the Friesland village of Makkinga, was caught having sex with a 15-year-old boy in a guesthouse in Katmandu, Nepal on Thursday. He was arrested with five others in a large action against child sex tourism, AD reports.

Two people were seriously injured when two boats crashed into each other on De Brekken, a lake near the Friesland town of Lemmer, the police said on Twitter.

A gas explosion on a motorboat in Terherne, Friesland on Thursday left a man and a woman seriously injured. They were rushed to hospital, NU.nl reports.
The man is in critical condition. The woman suffered severe burns, according to the Friesland fire department. The force of the explosion knocked the woman off the boat and into the water. Bystanders brought her to shore.
The boat was on Sneekermeer, near the town of Terherne when a gas bottle exploded. There were more gas bottles on board. Firefighters quickly removed them from the boat.

Snowfall resulted in icy, slippery roads in the north and east of the Netherlands on Thursday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel. Other weather services warn motorists in Flevoland and Gelderland to also be careful of slippery roads.

The majority of primary schools in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe are closed today as around 6 thousand teachers go on strike for higher salaries and lower workloads. This is the first of a relay strike, starting today in the North. On March 14th primary school teachers in Flevoland, Utrecht, and Noord-Holland will strike, combined with a demonstration in Amsterdam, NOS reports.
The strikes are supported by the PO-Front, a joint action group consisting of trade unions, school leaders and managers.
