Utrecht is the first city in the Netherlands to start integrating asylum seekers into society from their first day in the city. The city wants to put an end to the current practice of asylum applicants being moved about and integration starting late. "When you arrive in Utrecht, you stay in Utrecht", GroenLinks alderman Kees Diepeveen said to the Volkskrant. "This creates peace. For school-age children, being dragged around is very dramatic."

The one-of-a-kind Utrecht Psalter is to be removed this week from its highly secure fireproof and waterproof vault at the Utrecht University museum, and will be displayed for a month at the Museum Catharijneconvent. The Psalter will be shown off in a glass case from October 21 until November 22.

Recent calculations by theoretical physicists from Utrecht University's Sustainability department will allow energy producers to achieve a much higher yield when generating blue-energy. The findings of René van Roij, Mathijs Janssen and Andreas Härtel were published on 24 December 2014 in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters under the title 'Boosting Capacitive Blue-Energy and Desalination Devices with Waste Heat.'

Leiden University has taken first place over the University of Amsterdam and Delft University as the top university in the Netherlands, breaking into the top 50 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014/15. The Rankings judge universities upon four core missions and thirteen performance indicators to compare top universities, giving Leiden high marks for research, citations and international outlook.

Publication of doctoral research into the effects of so-called "lust pills" on women has been delayed by the Utrecht University after television documentary program ZEMBLA raised concerns about the independence of the committee reviewing the research. Five members of the eight-member team of researchers and evaluators have direct connections to Almere drug company Emotional Brain, the creators of two drugs meant to treat women diagnosed with sexual dysfunctions like lack of arousal. Both drugs were reviewed in the study.
