Two people found dead in recently sold home in Groningen town
Update 9:19 a.m. - Article updated with some information about the family who live in the house from neighbors
The police found the bodies of two people in a home on Meerhoven in Meerstad, Groningen, overnight. What happened is not yet known. A sign in the garden indicates that the home had recently been sold.
The police reported the discovery of the deceased people at 2:45 a.m. “We have launched an investigation into the circumstances in which both persons died,” the Groningen police said on X. The police did not say what prompted them to check the home.
Locals told RTV Noord that a married couple lived in the home with their 13-year-old daughter. The emergency services moved the child after the incident, according to the broadcaster. A dog was also present in a home. A neighbor took it in until an animal ambulance came to collect it.
Early Thursday morning, police cordoned off the street and were at the scene with multiple vehicles, with officers speaking to locals, RTV Noord reported. Forensic investigators were also conducting an investigation in and around the home.
Many families live on the street, an RTV Noord reporter said from the scene. "There are a lot of bicycles and children's toys in the street here. I just saw a neighbor completely in tears, and she flew into another neighbor's arms," the reporter said. A resident told the reporter that she heard a huge bang last night, but that could have been the police going into the house.
The residents reportedly lived in the neighborhood for a long time and recently sold the home to move to another location in the same neighborhood. A recent property listing shows that the residence is not connected to the natural gas network. The attached single-family home was recently sold, according to real estate platform Funda.
The corner home was listed for 495,000 euros towards the end of February, and a deal was made to sell the four-bedroom residence on March 16. Since then, the deal was successfully closed, the website states.
