Pregnant woman should get an extra ultrasound around the 13th week of pregnancy to detect abnormalities, the health council advised Dutch parliament on Thursday, NU.nl reports.

Currently the ultrasound is only done at 20 weeks, which gives the woman only four weeks to decide on whether or not to get an abortion if abnormalities are found.

The introduction of the 20-week ultrasound resulted in a significant decrease of abortions in a later phase. Since 2007 the 20-week ultrasound is standard procedure, making it possible to decide a course of action in case the child has a severe birth defect.
