German technology company Siemens is closing its branch in Hengelo, which employs 600 people. The closure forms part of a reorganization in Siemens' energy and gas branch that will cost over 6 thousand jobs worldwide, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to NU.nl.

The staff of the Hengelo branch were informed about what is happening at a meeting at stadium Grolsche Veste on Friday morning. The CEO of the division explained the closure via a video link. Whether there will be any forced redundancies, is not yet clear.

In the Rotterdam World Trade Center on Thursday politicians, companies, architects and inventors signed a 'green deal' for the eventual construction of the Dutch Windhweel - a massive, sustainable building in the shape of a wheel that will, hopefully, generate more energy than it uses. This very ambitious project is still in its planning phase, but if it becomes a reality, it is set to be an icon for green electricity, Trouw reports.

Dutch hematologist Jan van den Boogaart was awarded the European Inventor Award by the European Patent Office in Italy on Thursday for his new malaria test. The new test can diagnose malaria much faster and reliably than current methods, NU.nl reports.

Van den Boogaart worked with Austrian biochemist Oliver Hayden to develop the first automated blood test to diagnose the disease. The test includes an algorithm that can diagnose malaria at a rate of 120 blood tests per hour and an accuracy of 97 percent. The test won the researchers the award in the industry category.

The newest and so far largest Dutch wind farm opened some 85 kilometers off the coast of Groningen on Monday afternoon. Gemini consists of 150 wind mills, over two fields each covering an area of 34 square kilometers. The mills are able to generate enough clean energy to power 785 thousand households, NOS reports.

Construction of this wind farm started in 2015. It cost a total of about 28 billion euros. According to contractors Siemens and Van Oord, the Gemini Park reduces Dutch CO2 emissions by 1.25 million tons per year.

A group of 40 large Ducth companies called on the next Dutch government to to lay long-term goals of the Climate Agreement down in law. This is the only way to curb global warming, the companies wrote in a letter in the Volkskrant on Wednesday.

Dutch electronics group Philips is planning an initial public offering of its lighting business in 2016, reports Wall Street Journal. This follows the announcement made in September about the company splitting into two and spinning off its lighting branch.

Dutch electronics giant Philips today announced that they will be streamlining the 120-year-old company, separating its healthcare-lifestyle sector from its historic lighting division. While both companies will continue to use the Philips brand name, the move will incur annual restructuring costs of around 50 million euros and bring potential job losses.
