This year, working people with children will see their purchasing power increase the most, by around 1.5 to 2.5 percent, the Netherlands' institute for budget information Nibud reported on Thursday based on the latest calculations. Some families my even see their purchasing power rise by up to 4.5 percent, NU.nl reports.

Prices are expected to rise by 1.6 percent in 2020, while wages will increase by 2.8 percent on average. People who work will also benefit from the higher labor discount, and parents will benefit from better child-related benefits.

Over the past 12 years the Dutch Tax Authority incorrectly paid out 24 billion euros in allowances. The majority of this amount was recovered, but 1.5 billion euros is still outstanding and the Tax Authority wrote 806 million euros off as "irrecoverable", according to figures requested by Nieuws en Co and Nieuwsuur.

Since 2005, the Tax Authority paid out 150 billion euros in childcare allowance, rent allowance, healthcare allowance, and child-related budget. 16 percent of these payments, involving an amount of 24 billion euros, were wrongly paid.

Housing corporations are required to continue offering rental housing to families entitled to the social housing benefit. Minister of Housing Stef Blok announced on Friday that it is a legal standard that must be maintained. Blok wants to reverse the trend of more and more families with rent allowance signing expensive rental agreements, he said in a statement.
