Rail manager ProRail is going to invest 3.5 billion euros into building more train stations and renewing and modernizing existing ones over the next 10 years, ProRail CEO Pier Eringa announced with the rail manager's annual figures on Wednesday, NU.nl reports.

More train stations need to be built, especially as more and more residential areas are being built. Many municipalities already asked for their 'own' station, Eringa said. According to ProRail, there is room for about 20 new train stations, but they will only be built after negotiations with governments and financiers.

ProRail wants to run automated light rail trains between Schiphol and Amsterdam with extreme high frequencies - 30 times per hour. To achieve that, railways need to be cleared for this type of train. ProRail director Pier Eringa believes that these automated trains, which he compares to a city rail line like the S-Bahn in Berlin, will be needed to accommodate the increase in passengers between the Netherlands' capital and its main airport, Het Parool reports.

On Sunday ProRail posted another near-miss video of this same crossing. Like the first video, this video shows a cyclist very nearly being hit by a train.

New homes built along the railways must be better protected against the ever increasing vibrations caused by passing train traffic, according to ProRail CEO Pier Eringa. "More new construction and more train traffic can lead to more vibration- and noise inconvenience for our existing and new neighbors", Eringa said in an interview with the Volkskrant.

State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure and Water Management is not impressed by ProRail CEO Pier Eringa's intention to start blocking off unguarded railway crossings at his own initiative. "It is now a tradition for Mr. Eringa to show up with all kinds of plans in the media in the run-up to a parliamentary debate about railways", she said, NOS reports.

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, will discuss the railways on Thursday.

The number of train passengers in the Netherlands is expected to grow by 45 percent in the coming decade, according to ProRail. The rail manager is therefore investing at least 20 billion euros into rail renewal, so that it can cope with the passenger increase, ProRail CEO Pier Eringa said to the Telegraaf.

"People are sick of traffic jams on the road and in the city they are massively rushed into the train. That's great, of course, but something has to be done to absorb that explosive growth."
