The VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie - the four parties currently together - voted against permanently compensating the NIP-test for all pregnant women in the Tweede Kamer on Tuesday, NOS reports. Those four parties together make up a majority in the lower house of Dutch parliament.

The Dutch hospitals that can offer NIP tests to all pregnant women from April 1st are getting ready for a rush. They expect that half of the about 180 thousand pregnant women in the Netherlands per year will opt for the test, AD reports. Belgian company Gendia is suing the Dutch state for illegal state aid by subsidizing the test, which screens for serious disorders like Down's Syndrome.

A group of dozens of famous Dutch people expressed their concerns about the introduction of the NIP-test in the Netherlands in an open letter in the Volkskrant on Monday. The NIPT is a non-invasive test that can determine whether an unborn child will have Down's syndrome, among other syndromes.

Minister Edith Schippers of Public Health plans to add the NIPT-test to the basic health insurance package from January 1st next year, she wrote in a letter to parliament on Wednesday. "If the Health Council has no major objections, then I intend to give authorization for the NIPT test to be the first option. I expect to do this before the summer", she wrote
