On Tuesday the Rijksrecherche launched an investigation into possible criminal offenses committed by former chief prosecutors Marc van Nimwegen and Marianne Bloos, who were previously suspended because of a secret love affair. This is a so-called exploratory investigation of facts. If there are indications that criminal offenses were committed, a criminal investigation will be launched, NU.nl reports
Senior prosecutors Marc van Nimwegen and Marianne Bloos seriously violated the integrity rules of the Public Prosecution Service with their secret relationship and thereby damaged the entire organization, the Fokkens committee concluded after investigating the relationship. The Public Prosecution Service suspended Van Nimwegen on Wednesday, RTL Nieuws reports.
A number of parliamentarians want an explanation from Justice Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus about secret relationships within the Public Prosecution Service. On Wednesday NRC reported that two prosecutors lied about being in an relationship for years. And that two were appointed chief prosecutors by a prosecutor they had relationships with.
In 2016 the Public Prosecutor seized a record amount of 402,081,905 euros in money and assets from criminals in the Netherlands, almost triple the 144 million euros seized in 2015, the Prosecutor announced on Thursday.
