The Netherlands surpassed Switzerland and Germany as the most competitive economy in Europe. Worldwide, the Netherlands is in fourth place, after Singapore, the United States and Hong Kong, according to a comparison by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

According to the WEF researchers, "an entrepreneurial culture, flat organizations and growth of innovative companies" have made the Dutch economy much more agile.

Dutch bank ING saw its net profits increase to 1.35 billion euros in the third quarter, an increase of 27 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The bank's total income rose by 9 percent to 4.4 billion euros, ING announced on Thursday, ANP reports.

ING granted more loans to consumers and businesses and took in more savings. ING's loans increased by 3.6 billion euros and on balance attracted 2 billion euros in savings. Despite the low interest rates, the bank got "healthy" margins on its loans.

This involves 160 of the approximately 250 pension funds in the Netherlands. For many of these funds, this will be the second recovery plan they submit.

Many Dutch people still save, despite the low interest rate. For many people the savings account appears to be a "safe" way to keep a grip on the finances. About 78 percent of the wealth in the Netherlands is held in savings, the highest rate in Europe.
