People in the Netherlands use 26 billion pieces of plastic food packaging per year - 1,500 pieces of plastic per Dutch person per year, or four per day, according to a study by ING Economic Bureau. And plastic consumption continues to grow along with the population, increasing by around 100 million pieces of packaging every year, NOS reports.

As the industry is failing to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles ending up in the trash and littering the streets and nature, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure and Water Management has decided to move up her decision on introducing a deposit on small plastic bottles.

Animal rescuers in Velsen want the public to a better job of safely disposing of their trash. An animal ambulance unit in the Noord-Holland town expressed this on Facebook after they responded to a report of a with its head stuck in an empty bag of Bugles corn chips.

“Our colleague removed the bag from the fox’s head, after which he looked surprised,” the non-profit organization Dierenambulance Velsen said in the post. Reports of animals tied up in trash are relatively common, the group said.

Animal party PvdD will press charges against VVD party leader Klaas Dijkhoff on Tuesday for environmental pollution. Dijkhoff released 500 balloons at a VVD congress in Den Bosch on Saturday, AD reports.

With the release of the balloons, Dijkhoff responded to accusations that he released too many "test balloons" in his political work. He asked the the attendees of the congress to write down political ideas, which were attached to the balloons and released into the air.

Talking trash were being installed in three locations in the Indische Buurt in Amsterdam. The bins give you a compliment when you throw trash into them, in a playful attempt to stimulate residents to use the bins instead of throwing their rubbish on the streets, Het Parool reports.

The three talking trash cans are located on Batjanstraat, on Makassarplein and on Sumatraplantsoen. They will be unveiled at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. If they prove to be effective, they will be installed in more places.

The use of plastic bags dropped 71 percent since the Dutch government banned shops from giving them out for free in 2016, according to a report commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment on the results of the ban. Some 300 retailers were questioned about their experience with the free plastic bag ban, NU.nl reports.

Three Siberian tiger cubs were born in Dierenpark Amersfoort on Friday morning. This is mother Angara's first litter. Mother and cubs are doing fine.

Delight at Oostvaardesplassen as a litter of foxes was born Friday morning. The foxes can be followed via webcam, but it is still unclear how many foxes there actually are. From the images, people are guessing four pups were born.
