In the coming years the Netherlands plans to make itself a less attractive option for companies to establish shell companies in the country. The government is taking a number of measures to ban companies that only choose the Netherlands to avoid taxes at their home base.

The number 2 at the Finance Ministry, Menno Snel, wants to get rid of the image of the Netherlands as a place to dodge taxes.  "The Netherlands is not a tax haven," he says. "We are going to make sure that the [business] constructions that were in the news are no longer possible."

Labor union CNV is starting a hotline for people dealing with employment abuses as a result of the new Work and Security law that comes into effect on July 1, the union said on Friday morning. The law makes it easier for flexible contract workers, freelancers and temporary hires to get severance packages if they are let go.

A record number of 253 482 students enrolled in a course at a Dutch university in the academic year 2014 - 2015, according to figures from VSNU, the association of universities. That is an increase of 2.1 percent compared to the previous academic year. The most popular courses in the current academic year is Law, Psychology and Medicine.
