D66 wants European AMBER alert
The D66 in the European Parliament wants to introduce a European-wide AMBER Alert to find missing children as efficiently as possible. This was proposed by frontrunner Sophie in 't Veld during a European election debate in Maastricht earlier this month.
If this proposal passes, it would be the first law set up by the D66 if the European Parliament gets right if initiative, or the right to table bills. According to in 't Veld, this is the quickest way to legally arrange the European alarm system.
The European Parliament already called for the introduction of a European AMBER Alert in 2008. This was never heard, however. "That is unacceptable. We saw how well it works in the Netherlands, why not roll it out in Europe?
"If a child is kidnapped in the Netherlands, you're across the border within two hours. In all of Europe, an alarm should be able to ring with the press of a button if a child is missing", the D66-frontrunner said.
