The strongest earthquake of the year struck the Groningen province at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Dutch meteorological agency KNMI. The earthquake measured 3.1 on the Richter Scale, with an epicentre near Hellum, about 20 kilometers east of the city of Groningnen.
The earthquakes in Groningen can become more powerful than they have been until now. The authorities concerned, don't rule out the possibility of earthquakes with a magnitude between 4.5 and 6.0 on the Richter scale, in the future.
A few hundred to possibly thousands of homes in the Groninger earthquake zone need large-scale reinforcements. That's the conclusion that NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappy B.V.) draws in a report to minister Henk Kamp. According to a different report the value of the homes have not decreased more than elsewhere. The report on the reinforcement of Groninger building structures in the area where natural gas is extracted, is one of eleven investigating natural gas extraction and the effects. The minister of Economic affairs wants all the results in by December 1st.
